I love researching alternative therapies and ancient healing techniques. So once I was pregnant I started looking into beautiful options that I could blend with modern medicine for a calm and supported pregnancy and birth. Crystal therapy was one of the first modalities I was drawn too. Although not as popular in the west, gemstones and crystals have been used for centuries by shamans, healers, and midwifes to help women through this special time. So here is a list of crystals that I decided to keep near me during pregnancy, pack into my labour bag and incorporate into my little ones nursery.
If you want to find the secrets to the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.
Amethyst is great for women seeking protection and positivity during their pregnancy & birth. This beautiful purple stone has been described through history as a “beacon of light.” It purifies and protects its wearer, and shields against negative energy. As an Air element, it emits a calm and fluid frequency, and has long been used to help relieve physical and emotional pain. This is a lovely stone to wear as a birthing necklace, and can also be held as a tumble stone. For added support, place Amethyst geodes around your birthing space to help create a soothing environment of positivity and protection.
Rose Quartz were one of the first crystals that kept appearing everywhere when I was first pregnant. And interestingly, it’s a crystal with a very motherly energy. It’s best for women who above all desire unconditional love and emotional balance, which will help both Mum and Dad prepare emotionally for the arrival of the new baby. This stone connects very strongly with the heart chakra, allowing one to release stress, pain, and old wounds of mistrust or loss, which is perfect if you’ve had a stressful or traumatic birthing experience prior. It can also help foster a bond between you and your new baby. Rose Quartz is ideal to place near Bub after birth as it has a very smoothing and loving energy
Hematite is useful for fatigue in pregnancy. It’s a very grounding stone that can assist with fatigue but shouldn’t be worn and used continuously. I decided to get a ring made of Hematite, and wore it during days I had to go work and felt exhausted! Alternatively, just a piece of Hematite held in your hands while you do some bare foot grounding in the backyard would be wonderful too.
Moonstone is perfect for before, during and after childbirth. Help relieve stress fear and tension during childbirth makes for a smooth delivery. Moonstone is the Divine Feminine stone; it works with the moon and cycles, covers shifting energies from fertility to preparing the womb for conception, then to providing smooth process and easiness in pregnancy and childbirth and with breastfeeding.
Bloodstone can be placed on the mother, and is said to ease the pain of childbirth and said to help prevent hemorrhaging. As the name suggests is great in regulating blood flow, and a wonderful healing stone. Said to strengthen one’s self-confidence and open one’s senses to inner guidance, helping to keep calm, especially during survival situations. An excellent women’s stone, as it relieves not only symptoms of menstrual and menopausal pain, but also assists women with strength and stamina while in labor and childbirth.
Lapis Lazuli unleashes the inner spiritual queen within, enhances intuition and self-truth. Quickly releases stress, bringing peace, harmony and deep inner self-knowledge. Helps the body reduce the physical stresses caused by pregnancy. In the 17th century, ultramarine pigment made from crushed lapis lazuli was added to a potent medicine called Alkermes Syrup and was given to women who experienced difficulties during childbirth
Malachite is a powerful emotional cleanser helping to remove past traumas and negative emotions. Known as the “midwives stone” as it helps to stimulate contractions, ease labor pains and facilitates a safe childbirth. However, be careful to get a polished piece of Malachite rather than raw because it contains copper and can be toxic. Never take an elixir if it states any Malachite was used.
Black Tourmaline in the bedroom in the corners (large enough so they do not go in anyones mouth) or on top of shelves to ground and protect the room. I’ll also be bringing some with me to my birthing centre/hospital to place in all 4 corners of the room.
Moss Agate encourages regeneration and growth. It heals and protects the uterus, guards from prolapse of the uterus and encourages normal shrinkage of the uterus after childbirth.
Mookaite has a welcoming energy and assists women with staying in the moment during labour. Mookaite also brings trust in the process of birth, as it has an empowering feminine energy. This is a wonderful stone for women to wear during their entire pregnancies as it will help moving into your new role as a mother. This is a stone that is useful after the baby is born to help the baby anchor their energy and also helps with a nurturing energy for mum. I found a stunning little owl of Mookaite to incorporate into my new babies room.
A beautiful option is to make a crystal grid in your labour room. I will be using Moss Agate, Rose Quartz and Moonstones with an Amethyst piece in the centre.
